This is one of the most common questions I hear from expecting moms, and it’s a good one. The location you choose shapes not only how your portraits look, but how the entire experience feels. The answer? Both are beautiful but only you can decide based on your personal vibe, the environment you’re looking for and the finished artwork you’re envisioning.
Do you like the polished elegance of a studio session? Or are you drawn to the natural romance of an outdoor location along the coast or in one of Orange County’s beautiful parks?
If you’re new here, you can see examples of maternity work here to get a feel for both styles before you decide.
A studio session offers control, comfort, and timelessness. My Old Town Tustin studio was intentionally designed to feel calm, bright, and effortless for expecting mothers.
Here’s why many moms love choosing an indoor maternity session:
Controlled Environment
No wind, no weather concerns, and perfect lighting every time. **And access to a bathroom at all times.
Easy access to the Curated Client Wardrobe
You have the full collection of maternity gowns and dresses available, with plenty of time for outfit changes without feeling rushed.
A Polished, Editorial Look
Studio portraits have a refined, minimal aesthetic that never goes out of style and looks incredible as framed artwork in your home.
Luxury Comfort
Hair and makeup take place right in the studio, so you can relax and feel cared for before stepping in front of the camera.
Studio maternity sessions are perfect for mothers who love portraits that feel classic, clean, and magazine-worthy.

Outdoor portraits capture connection in a completely different way. Orange County offers an incredible range of natural backdrops—from the cliffs of Laguna Beach to gorgeous trees, tall grasses and rolling hills in our regional parks.
Here’s what makes outdoor sessions so special:
Golden Hour Glow
Sunset light creates a soft, romantic warmth that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
Natural Movement
Flowing gowns, wind in your hair, and sunlight on your skin create portraits full of life and emotion.
Seasonal Variety
Spring blossoms, summer beaches, fall textures, and cozy winter tones all bring something unique to your gallery.
A Sense of Place
Your portraits are tied to the landscapes you love and the place you call home.
Outdoor maternity sessions are ideal for mothers who love movement, natural light, and the beauty of Orange County woven into their story. Orange County offers incredible scenery for portraits. You can explore some of the public coastal locations through the OC Parks website.

There is no wrong choice—only what feels most like you.
When deciding, consider:
Your style: editorial elegance or organic naturalism?
Your comfort: do you prefer a controlled studio or the openness of nature?
Your home: what kind of artwork do you picture on your walls?
If you’re unsure, you might also find it helpful to read this that talks about how wardrobe often influences which setting feels right.
One of the most important things to think about is how your portraits will look once they’re transformed into heirloom artwork.
Indoor Portraits as Artwork
Studio images create polished, minimal pieces that look stunning as framed wall art or modern gallery groupings. They blend beautifully into contemporary interiors and feel timeless.
Outdoor Portraits as Artwork
Outdoor images often have more movement and color, making them perfect for large statement pieces or spreads in a family album. They feel emotional, expansive, and deeply personal.
