At Jennifer Imus Photography in Old Town Tustin, I photograph newborns through a calm, baby-led, full-service studio newborn photoshoot in Orange County experience designed especially for new moms, dads, siblings, and brand-new babies.
For me, luxury newborn photography in Orange County means something much more practical: you are taken care of from the moment you walk into my newborn studio until your finished artwork is hanging in your home.
Most new parents are tired. Many moms are still healing. Some babies arrive sleepy, some arrive wide awake, and some need to stop and eat three times before we take the first portrait. That is normal. I plan for all of it.
A newborn session should not feel like another thing you have to manage. My job is to create a calm, baby-led experience where you can walk in with your newborn and know that the studio, wardrobe, styling, posing, and final artwork are already handled. And if you have questions like: What will the session be like? Will my baby cooperate? How long will it take? Should I book a studio or in-home lifestyle newborn session? Keep reading!
When you arrive at my Tustin studio, I want the first few minutes to feel calm. You do not need to rush in, hand me the baby, and immediately start taking photos.
Most families need a few minutes to settle. Sometimes the baby needs to eat. Sometimes mom needs to sit down. Sometimes an older sibling needs a minute to look around and warm up to the space.
Before you arrive, I have the studio prepared:
I always tell parents: once you are here, we are on baby time.
If your newborn needs to be fed, rocked, changed, or cuddled before we begin, that is part of the session. It does not throw anything off.

Every newborn I photograph is different.
Some babies settle as soon as they are swaddled. Some want to eat twice before they fall asleep. Some love being wrapped. Some need extra time in mom’s arms before they are ready for baby-only portraits.
That is why my sessions are baby-led.
Baby-led means I watch your baby’s cues instead of forcing a strict pose list. If your baby is hungry, we pause. If your baby needs to be held, we slow down. If your baby is wide awake, I photograph those bright-eyed newborn portraits instead of fighting for sleep.
This is one of the biggest differences between a rushed newborn session and a full-service newborn experience.
The goal is not to make your baby perform. The goal is to keep your baby safe, comfortable, and beautifully photographed in a way that feels natural.
Most newborn sessions last about 2–3 hours, but I do not treat the clock like the boss. Your baby sets the pace.
You don’t need to bring anything except your baby! But for everything else worth knowing before session day, here’s my Orange County newborn session prep guide for parents. My studio includes a curated collection of:
Wraps and swaddles in neutral, timeless tones
Baby-sized outfits made of organic fabrics
Simple bows, bonnets, and headbands
Elegant props like textured blankets
I have over 75+ dresses for mom from maternity brands like Morning Lavender, Baltic Born and Reclamation Company.

Luxury newborn photography celebrates the entire family, not just the baby. That’s why I provide:
Professional hair and makeup for moms, so you feel radiant and confident even in the postpartum stage.
A curated wardrobe for moms and younger siblings in neutral tones, ensuring everyone looks cohesive.
One thing I hear often from new moms is:
“I want to be in the photos, but I don’t feel ready.”
I understand that. You just had a baby. Your body is healing. You may not be sleeping much. Getting camera-ready can feel like too much.
That is why I include styling support, wardrobe guidance, and professional hair and makeup. You do not have to figure it all out alone.
For moms, I usually recommend soft dresses or pieces that skim the body instead of clinging. For partners, simple shirts or knits in soft neutral colors photograph well. For siblings, comfort matters most. If a toddler is stiff, itchy, or annoyed by their outfit, we will all know it within five minutes.
I would rather have a comfortable child in a simple outfit than a perfectly styled child who wants nothing to do with photos.
Your baby’s safety is the most important part of the session. Everything else is secondary.
I never push a newborn into a position their body isn’t already going. A stressed baby doesn’t settle, and a baby that doesn’t settle means we’re both just waiting. So I pay attention. If they keep bringing their hands up to their face, I work with that. If they’re happiest swaddled, we spend more time wrapped. I’ve had sessions where a baby wanted nothing to do with the setup I’d spent an hour styling, but was perfectly happy stretched out on a simple cream wrap. Those images were some of the best from the whole gallery.
Parents tell me later that the detail shots are what get them. I’m talking about things like the curl of their toes, those barely-there eyelashes, the little wisps of hair at the back of their neck, the way their whole body fits in your palm. You think you’ll remember exactly what all of that looked like. Six months later, you’re surprised by how much has already slipped.
Parents sometimes feel like they’re supposed to stay out of the way. Moms especially. I’ve had so many moms tell me they don’t want to be in photos, and then completely lose it when they see the image of themselves holding their baby in those first quiet weeks.
Your baby is going to grow up wondering what that looked like. What your face looked like when you looked at them. That’s worth having.
You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll show you where to stand, how to hold the baby, and where to look. If you’re recovering from a C-section or just feeling sore, I adjust the posing so you’re not uncomfortable. We move at whatever pace works.
A session can include baby alone, family portraits, sibling moments, detail images, and quiet feeding or cuddle shots if you want them. Most of my favorite galleries have a mix of all of it.
About two to three weeks after your session, you’ll come back in and we’ll go through your images together.
Some families walk out with an album. Some want a large framed piece for the nursery or the hallway. Some want just a handful of their favorites as prints with the digital files. I don’t have a script for this part — I just help you figure out what fits your home and how you actually use your space.
Your portraits should end up somewhere you see them every day. That’s the whole point.
Your newborn session should feel like a celebration, not a chore. With a baby-led approach, curated wardrobe, professional styling, and heirloom artwork, the process is designed to be stress-free and deeply meaningful. If you’re just starting to explore options, take a look at what makes our newborn sessions different.
