Baby Sophia | Orange County Newborn Pictures

Family of four looking lovingly at swaddled newborn baby during photoshoot in Orange County.

I first met Vanessa, an expecting Orange County mom, at the Bump to Baby Expo at The District at Tustin Legacy. A few weeks later, she booked her Orange County newborn pictures with me at Jennifer Imus Photography, my newborn photography studio in Tustin, California. She had been searching for a newborn photographer in Orange County, and meeting in person at the Expo helped us connect right away.

Local community events like the Bump to Baby Expo are such a sweet way to connect with expecting Orange County moms before welcoming them into my Tustin studio. My newborn photography studio serves families throughout Orange County.

This newborn session was done in early July and included Vanessa, her husband Jon, big brother Jacob, and their new baby girl, Sophia. Photographing their first portraits as a family of four was such an honor.

Baby Sophia’s Orange County Newborn Pictures at 12 Days Old

Baby Sophia arrived at 12 days old, wide awake and curious! So I caught some beautiful direct-eye-contact baby portraits before she settled into sleep. These Orange County newborn pictures started with awake baby portraits, then moved into soft, sleepy swaddled images once she relaxed. Her parents brought a calm, easygoing energy to the studio, and that helped both Sophia and Jacob stay relaxed throughout the morning.

For Sophia’s Orange County newborn pictures, we played with a variety of colors, textures, and soft styling. We started with a clean white swaddle and a tiny bow to show off those beautiful dark eyes while she was still alert.

Once she drifted off, we changed her into a darling soft pink ruffled tulle onesie paired with a dainty floral headband. We also made sure to get some minimalist shots using a simple cream blanket and my favorite green leaf headband for a more organic feel.

Since the family loved the idea of a soft pop of color, we styled a custom set using a dusty blue swaddle. The cool tones looked so beautiful against her skin and tied in perfectly with the blue accents in Mom’s dress.

This family was recently in my studio, too, for their newborn photoshoot with big brother.

For the final family portraits, we kept Sophia in the blue wrap so everyone looked perfectly coordinated. I especially love how we were able to match baby Sophia’s wrap with a gorgeous floral headband with pops of pink, along with the exact blue hue from the swaddle.

We finished these Orange County newborn pictures on the white futon, soaking up the soft, natural light from the studio windows. It was the perfect way to wrap up such a sweet day with this new family of four!

How I Keep Newborn Pictures Easy With Older Siblings

Many families ask how the session will flow with siblings and how to keep the little ones happy. To keep things running smoothly, I recommend having a partner or grandparent bring the older children to the studio after we finish the baby’s solo portraits and the photos of baby with mom. T

This way, we capture the sibling and family pictures right away while everyone’s energy is high. It minimizes waiting time, keeps the kids in good spirits, and ensures we get those genuine, joyful interactions before they get restless.

After we complete the family and sibling photos, the kids can relax in the studio with the quiet activities and snacks I provide while I wrap up the rest of the newborn shots. My goal is to keep their time here fun and engaging, but intentionally brief so the whole process remains easy and stress-free for your entire family.

A Blue and Floral Palette for Sophia’s Orange County Newborn Pictures

I love seeing what color theme each client will choose! We often start with mom’s dress and then coordinate baby and the rest of the family from there.

  • White
  • Rose
  • Soft coral
  • Light dusty blue
  • Sage green
  • Light khaki

For her wardrobe, Vanessa chose a stunning white maxi dress from the studio closet that featured a delicate blue and pink floral vine pattern. It was the perfect choice for a spring session, especially with her dark hair styled in soft, polished waves.

We captured some of my favorite images of the day with Vanessa snuggled up with Sophia on my vintage French chair and lounging on the white studio futon.

Jon and Jacob went with a classic, coordinated look that never goes out of style—crisp white button-downs and light khaki pants. I love this neutral palette because it keeps the gallery feeling bright and cohesive, ensuring the focus stays on baby Sophia and the family connections.

Family Photos With Mom, Dad, and Big Brother Jacob

For mom’s time with Sophia, we started on the vintage armchair, which is always such a beautiful and elegant place to begin. It naturally slows everything down and gives us that soft, connected feel right away. She held baby Sophia in close, no over-posing needed. I like to move around mom in the chair to get a variety of angles, especially the close-in crops that show just enough of mom with baby for an intimate feel.

I love how some of the shots make you feel like you’re an observer of such a really memorable moment. And the close ups are so beautiful with Sophia’s blue swaddle bringing out the same blue hue in moms dress.

From there, we moved into a few standing shots to add a little variety. These always feel a bit more editorial, but still soft and natural. The way she supported Sophia, she just melted into her, it all came together so organically.

Dad and baby shots followed the same natural flow. We kept it simple and focused on connection. Starting seated on my elegant cream bench, then bringing him to standing, giving just enough direction so he felt comfortable but never stiff.

There’s always something really special about the way dads hold their newborns. A little more protective, a little more still. Sophia settled right into him, and those images have such a calm, grounded feel. I love the side angles with dad, to give the true scale of dad to newborn, when he holds baby close in, nose-to-nose, then with a little kiss. It adds such a precious moment to the gallery.

For the family portion of these Orange County newborn pictures, we brought everyone onto the futon to keep the gallery feeling bright and cohesive.Mom sat first with Sophia, then dad came in close, angled toward them so we could build that connection. We started with everyone looking at the camera, clean and classic, then shifted into more interaction.

Mom looking at baby, dad looking at mom and big brother Jacob joining in with his big smiles. Sitting close, leaning in, letting Jacob interact naturally with Sophia led to such sweet interactions. A hand on her, a curious look, a little smile, even a little kiss.
