Things to Consider When Choosing a Newborn Photographer

Finding the right newborn photographer is such an exciting part of getting ready for your baby’s arrival. These photos will freeze those precious first days in time—because, let’s face it, they go by way too fast. With so many photographers out there, I know it can feel a little overwhelming to figure out who’s the best fit for your family. To help simplify the process, here are some key things to consider when choosing a newborn photographer.

Style Matters

Every photographer has their own style, so finding one that feels right for you is key. Do you love posed portraits with soft, dreamy backdrops? Or do you prefer more candid, lifestyle shots that capture your baby in their natural environment? Spend a little time browsing portfolios to see what catches your eye and feels like it fits your family’s vibe. These photos will hang on your walls for years, so choose a style you truly love.

Safety First

Your baby’s safety should be the top priority for any newborn photographer. Make sure you find someone who really knows how to handle newborns safely and carefully—your baby’s comfort comes first. Ask if they’ve had any specific training in newborn photography safety. A good photographer will always prioritize your baby’s comfort and well-being during the session.

Also ask if your session will be “baby-led”. That means that the session timing, energy and flow is all dependent on what the baby needs. We are a 100% baby-led, newborn studio. If baby needs mom, we take a break. If baby needs to feed? We are going to let her. No one should rush a newborn. We are on their time!

Experience and Expertise

Newborn photography is a specialized field that requires skill and patience. An experienced photographer knows how to handle fussy babies, create a calm environment, and capture those fleeting moments of serenity. It’s totally okay to ask how many newborn sessions they’ve done—experience makes a big difference.

Session Style: Studio vs. Lifestyle

Decide whether you’d prefer a studio session or a lifestyle session in your home. Studio sessions typically involve posed shots with professional lighting and props, while lifestyle sessions focus on capturing natural moments in a familiar setting. Both have their charms, so think about which setting feels right for you and your family.

Reviews and Recommendations

Recommendations from friends and other parents can be a lifesaver when choosing a photographer. Ask friends, family, or local parenting groups for recommendations. Check online reviews and testimonials to get a sense of other families’ experiences. A photographer with glowing reviews is often a safe bet.

Pricing and Packages

Newborn photography is an investment, and prices can vary widely. Be sure to ask about pricing upfront and what’s included in their packages. Do they offer digital files, prints, or albums? Are there additional costs for props or extra time? While sticking to your budget is important, these photos are something you’ll treasure forever, so go with a photographer whose work really speaks to you.

Another consideration? Does the photographer offer printed products after your session? At our studio, we are experts in the design and printing of gorgeous heirloom artwork. In fact, our clients come to us specifically because we take care of every detail!

Timing Is Everything

Newborn sessions are typically done within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are still sleepy and easy to pose. Because of this, it’s a good idea to book your session during your pregnancy to ensure availability. Many photographers book up months in advance, so don’t wait too long to secure your spot.

Connection and Comfort

Your photographer will be spending time with you and your baby during a very special, and sometimes emotional, moment. It’s important to feel comfortable with them. Do they communicate well and make you feel at ease? A great photographer will not only be talented but also warm and approachable.

Capturing More Than Newborn Photos

Many newborn photographers also offer maternity and family sessions. Choosing someone who can grow with your family is a wonderful way to ensure consistency in your family’s story. Ask about bundled packages or milestone sessions to capture your baby’s first year.
