When to Book a Santa Photoshoot for an Easier Holiday Season

I’m going to disagree with some of the advice you’ll find online about when to book a Santa photoshoot.

You do not need to think about Santa in July.

You’re still in the middle of summer. The kids are out of school. You’re taking vacations, going to the beach and trying to keep everyone entertained.

Then August arrives and suddenly it’s back-to-school mode. School supplies, new shoes, schedules, sports, figuring out who needs to be where and when. The last thing most parents need is someone telling them they also need to hurry up and book Santa because Christmas is coming.

I’ve actually asked my clients about this over the years, and they’ve told me pretty clearly: July and August are just too early.

So I listened.

I open my Old Town Tustin Santa Experience in September.

It’s early enough to give families time to plan, but not so early that I’m asking you to think about Christmas while you’re still finding sand in the backseat of your car.

And if you’re wondering when to book a Santa photoshoot in Orange County, September is the month I’d put on your calendar.

Because Christmas may feel far away now.

It won’t for long.

When Should I Actually Book My Santa Photoshoot?

For my Orange County Santa sessions, the answer is September.

Every year, my Santa Experience takes place on the second Saturday in November at my photography studio in Old Town Tustin. Booking opens about two months beforehand.

There are three different booking dates:

September 10: Past Santa Legacy families receive first access.

September 11: Current Jennifer Imus Photography clients receive priority access.

September 15: Santa reservations open to the public.

Giving my Legacy families first choice is one of the benefits of choosing that experience. Many of these families have made visiting our Santa part of their Christmas tradition, and I want them to have first dibs on the time they’d like the following year.

I also give my current photography clients early access. If you’ve trusted me to photograph your family during the year, I want to take care of you when Santa comes around too.

Then on September 15, I send the booking link to everyone on my Nice List and open any remaining appointments to the public.

Many appointments are reserved early, so booking when the calendar opens gives you the most choice.

And because this is a one-day event, there’s an important difference between my Santa Experience and photographers who offer holiday sessions across several weekends:

I don’t add another Santa weekend when the appointments are gone.

Santa has places to be. 😂

What Does the Best Santa Photoshoot Time Actually Mean?

There really isn’t one magical Santa appointment time that’s best for every child.

I know you’ll sometimes hear that toddlers should always be photographed first thing in the morning or that older children should come later.

That’s not really what I’ve seen.

My appointments tend to book pretty randomly throughout the day because every child is different.

The best time is the time that works for your child.

If your toddler is at their absolute happiest in the morning and turns into a tiny disaster when they’re hungry or tired, choose accordingly. If your child is flexible and can happily roll with a different schedule for the day, you have more options.

This is where booking early helps.

You’re choosing the appointment that works for your family instead of looking at the calendar later and trying to decide whether the remaining time will work around a nap.

Why Are My Santa Photos Always in November?

I hold the Old Town Tustin Santa Experience on the second Saturday in November every year.

That’s very intentional.

November is close enough to Christmas that walking into a studio filled with holiday lights and seeing Santa feels exciting and seasonal. But it’s also early enough that I have time to carefully edit and deliver your photographs while you still have plenty of Christmas season left to enjoy them.

There’s another practical reason people don’t always realize.

Professional Santas are incredibly busy.

By December, many of the best Santas are committed to corporate events and other large holiday appearances. Very few are available for the kind of intimate, non-corporate Santa Experience I want to create in my studio.

And I’m pretty particular about Santa.

When you have who I believe is the best REAL Santa in Orange County, you plan around him. 😂

So the second Saturday of November has become our day.

How Do Santa Photos Fit Into the Christmas Card Timeline?

This is one of the biggest reasons I don’t wait until December to photograph Santa.

So many of my families use an image from their Santa gallery for their Christmas card.

And if you’ve ever done Christmas cards, you know that “we need a picture for the card” is only the beginning.

You need the photograph.

Then you need to choose the card.

Design it.

Order it.

Wait for it to arrive.

Address everything.

Buy stamps.

And then actually get the cards into the mail.

And don’t forget the mailing deadline. The USPS recommends sending holiday cards early, so having your Santa photos back with plenty of time means one less December deadline to scramble around.

Suddenly it’s December 18 and you’re staring at a stack of beautifully addressed Christmas cards sitting on your kitchen counter. Ask me how I know. 😂

My Classic and Deluxe Santa galleries are delivered approximately three weeks after the event, with Legacy families receiving priority editing. With our Santa Experience taking place on the second Saturday in November, that timing is designed to give families their photographs while there’s still time to create holiday cards and gifts.

The Holiday To-Dos That Get Easier Once Your Santa Photos Are Done

I remember December when my own kids were little.

The final weeks before Christmas break were a blur.

Classroom parties. Holiday performances. Shopping. Wrapping gifts. After-school activities finishing up for the year. Figuring out Christmas cards. Family plans.

And somehow, in the middle of all of that, you’re also trying to keep the magic of Christmas alive for your kids.

There were years when it felt like I was getting through December with my hair on fire.

I learned pretty quickly to front-load whatever I could.

I almost always tried to have our family photos and Christmas card figured out shortly after Thanksgiving because it gave me a little breathing room for everything else that December was about to throw at me.

That’s really what booking Santa early is about.

It isn’t about being the mom who has Christmas completely organized in September.

Does that mom even exist?

It’s about getting one thing onto the calendar before the holiday calendar gets crazy.

And once your Santa gallery arrives, you can use those photographs for so much more than a Christmas card.

Grandparent gifts. Prints. Framed photographs. Holiday displays around your home. Albums and other keepsakes.

Or simply your camera roll, where you will inevitably look at them next year and wonder how your child changed that much in twelve months.

When Should I Pick Outfits for a Santa Photoshoot?

This is another reason September booking works so well.

You don’t need to have your children’s Santa outfits figured out when you reserve your appointment.

Once my Santa set is complete, I send families information about the year’s design along with a wardrobe guide filled with ideas that work beautifully with it.

Then you have time.

You can shop if you want to. You can coordinate siblings. You can order something, discover that your child absolutely refuses to wear it, return it and try again.

Or you can decide everyone is wearing Christmas pajamas and call it a day.

I love beautiful holiday outfits, but I will always choose a comfortable child over a perfectly styled miserable one.

We survived. The pictures were adorable.

Does September Really Feel Too Early to Book Santa Photos?

Sometimes.

That’s actually why I don’t open booking earlier.

In July, Christmas feels ridiculous.

In August, you’ve got enough going on.

But September?

September is when I think it’s reasonable to put a few holiday things onto your radar.

Most photographers with studios who offer Santa sessions in Orange County begin booking their November events well before families actually feel like Christmas is coming.

And if you’re still deciding where to book, here’s how to choose the right Santa photographer in Orange County and what I recommend looking for beyond the set and the price.

Booking early doesn’t mean taking Santa pictures early.

That’s the distinction.

You’re simply reserving the appointment.

By the time Halloween passes and suddenly every school email contains the words “holiday performance,” you’ll be very glad Santa is already sitting there on your calendar.

Future December You will appreciate September You for handling this one.

What Happens If I Wait Until October to Book?

You can absolutely check.

There are usually a few appointments that linger into October, but you’ll have fewer choices than families who booked when reservations opened.

And because my Santa Experience happens on one day, I can’t simply move you to another weekend if your ideal appointment has already been reserved.

That’s why I wouldn’t deliberately wait.

If you’re reading this in October and there are appointments available, grab one.

If you’re reading this later and the event is full, get yourself onto my Nice List anyway. You’ll receive information about the next Santa Experience when public reservations open.

And if you already know this is something you want to make part of your family’s Christmas tradition, don’t wait for your Instagram feed to fill up with everyone else’s Santa pictures before remembering to book yours.

That’s usually a pretty good sign that Santa season is already underway.

What Does a Santa Photoshoot Look Like at Jennifer Imus Photography?

My Old Town Tustin Santa Experience is intentionally very different from standing in a long mall line for a quick picture with Santa.

Your family has private time with him.

Our Classic and Deluxe Experiences are 10 minutes, and those ten minutes belong to your child.

Santa knows their name before they arrive. They can share their wish list, read a story, investigate Santa’s special Nice List, play with his reindeer staff or simply take their time deciding what they think about this guy in the red suit.

Some children run right up to him.

Some don’t.

We never force it.

Before the session, families receive preparation information and my wardrobe guide. Your child also receives a letter from Santa in the mail, which helps build the excitement before they ever walk through my doors.

Afterward, every child leaves with a special gift from Santa.

The Classic Experience includes five beautifully edited digital images, while Deluxe includes the complete gallery. I also offer just two extended 20-minute Santa Legacy Experiences each year for families who want more time, additional personalization, milk and cookies, a highlight video, full gallery, fine art print and more.

Book Your Santa Photoshoot Before the Holiday Rush Begins

I don’t want Santa booking to become one more thing you’re pressured to do ridiculously early.

That’s exactly why I wait until September.

But I also know what’s coming.

I’ve lived those Decembers with little kids.

I’ve done the parties and performances and shopping and wrapping and cards while trying to make everything feel magical for my children.

Christmas with my grown kids looks different now, and I would give a lot to step back into those years for just a little while.

So yes, there are things I wish I could go back and worry about less.

But the things I would never regret?

The photographs.

The traditions.

The evidence of who they were at that exact moment.

So when September comes around, put Santa on the calendar.

Not because you need to rush Christmas.

Because once December arrives, you’ll be glad this particular piece of the magic is already taken care of.
